India’s tour of Sri Lanka is almost upon us. This upcoming series holds utmost importance for team India in several departments. For starters, it will allow young players to get some playing time ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2021. Additionally, the team will play under head coach Rahul Dravid.
Dravid has been a keen figure in grooming new talent for the Indian cricket team over the last few years. Since the first string players will be simultaneously playing against England, the BCCI decided to send in a young team to Sri Lanka.
Well, the board must definitely expect the team to win the series, but they might have a superior goal in mind. The series will allow the selectors to give chances to the rising Indian stars for the forthcoming T20 World Cup.
Coach Rahul Dravid on the importance Sri Lanka series for youngsters
With the team soon leaving for Sri Lanka, coach Rahul Dravid and captain Shikhar Dhawan revealed some vital aspects to look forward to against Sri Lanka. During the press conference, Dravid said:
“[Devdutt] Padikkal, Ruturaj [Gaikwad] and other youngsters will be very keen to do well in this series. Whether they get called up is up to selectors in the T20 World Cup, but certainly doing well in the series will help them a lot.”
Donning the national jersey allows young players to elevate their game to the next level. The series against Sri Lanka will serve that purpose for many players. The selectors have decided to give five players their debut cap as well.
Rahul Dravid further added, “There are only 3 T20 for India before the World Cup, I am sure selectors and management will have a fair idea what will be the squad for the World Cup. There might be odd spots, players might raise their hand through the Sri Lanka series.”
Selectors will be able to make a much better decision to submit the final squad for the T20 World Cup after the series against Sri Lanka. Hopefully, fans will get to witness some new faces playing for the Men in Blue.
