On Tuesday, Indian opener Rohit Sharma and left-handed batsman Suresh Raina came live on Instagram. Rohit asked some questions about his experiences when he is a part of the 2011 World Cup-winning team and also about former Captain MS Dhoni’s comeback plans.
Raina told Rohit Sharma about his desire to make comeback into the national squad and also said that he wants to wear the Indian team India jersey again.
Raina quipped that he has a lot of cricket left in him. He also revealed how he is preparing hard when he is out of the team.
“When I was out of the team, I was working on my game, I was injured as well so I worked on my fitness, I passed the yo-yo test as well, everything is dependent on the hard work, I still believe I have more to offer,” Raina told Rohit during the interaction.
The left-handed batsman said if things are not going good with any player then it becomes necessary that someone show trust and faith in you then you can do wonders.
“I still have some cricket left in me, I have always enjoyed my game when things were not good, then you need someone to show trust and faith in you, if players get the desired faith, then they can do wonders,” he added.
During the interaction, Sharma told Raina that team members always talk about Raina to bring him back in the team as he is an experienced batsman but Sharma also said that but team selection is not in our hands.
“We always talk about bringing you back, but the team selection is not in our hands,” Rohit said.
Raina last played his International match against England, on July 8, 2018 at Leeds.
He has played 226 ODIs, 18 Tests and 78 T20s so far. He has a record of first Indian to hit a century in T20 cricket. He was also a part of the 2011 winning World Cup squad and 2013 winning Champions Trophy team.
Suresh Raina also revealed something about former Captain MS Dhoni that he has a lot of cricket left in him and during the CSK training camp, Mahi was in good touch with the bat, and he middled every ball. He also looks better physically.
“I was there with Mahi Bhai in CSK’s training camp. He was in good touch with the bat and in the right frame of mind. He is also physically fit. So only he (Dhoni) can tell what will be his next step,” said Raina.
“I think he still has a lot of cricket left in him and was batting really well. Now only he can plan about his future as there is a lot of speculation going on right now,” he added.
Dhoni played his last match in the 2019 World Cup semifinal against New Zealand as after that match he never made himself available.
In World cricket, Dhoni is the only captain who won three ICC trophies which are 50 over World Cup in 2011, Championship Trophy in 2013 and T20 World Cup in 2007.
After this, Rohit asked Raina to talk about the atmosphere of the 2011 World Cup squad, Raina replied that the 2011 World Cup-winning team was like a family as each member of the team including players and support staff helped each other.
“Everyone in the squad motivated and helped each other, it was like a family. The management gave importance to everyone. The management has a key role when it comes to ICC tournaments,” Raina told Sharma during the interaction.
In the 2011 World Cup, India lost the group stage match against South Africa, however, Raina said that defeat came at the right time as it gave a chance to fix things.
“When we lost the match against South Africa in the 2011 World Cup, we had a lot of meetings after that. Sachin paaji also told us that we all should stay positive and united. Mahi Bhai and Sachin paaji were exceptional in motivating the guys, they motivated everyone and then we went into the knockout stages. I think we lost the match at the right time and then the meetings came at the right time,” Raina said.
Raina played just 4 games in the 2011 World Cup, and the innings he played in the quarter finals against Australia(34) was the most ceucial one.
“In the quarterfinals match against Australia, Yuvi paa was mentoring me along, he told me that we both will play sensibly when I was in the dressing room. Sachin paaji told me that I will play a match-winning knock, it gave me confidence as I did not play many league games. Gary Kirsten also helped me, he was always there in terms of throw-downs,” Raina said.
India defeated Sri Lanka in the finals of the 2011 World Cup at the Wankhede Stadium. Gautam Gambhir and MS Dhoni played match-winning innings at final which sealed the 2011 World Cup and India lift the World Cup after a long wait of 28 years.
