Team India selectors have raised alarms on Varun Chakravarthy’s prevailing fitness issues ahead of the all-important 2021 ICC T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Chakravarthy, who has been in top form for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2021, has injury concerns in his knees.
Notably, the 30-year-old is one of the five spinners among Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Rahul Chahar. A recent report confirmed that Chakravarthy’s knees are not in the greatest of condition. Meanwhile, another report has confirmed that he can be in the national squad if his fitness issues can be managed ahead of the much-awaited ICC tournament.
“Chakravarthy was selected because he was fit to play. If his injury can be managed through the World Cup, he will certainly be in the team,” a top BCCI official told The Times of India on Saturday.
“No decision has been taken on Chahal” – BCCI official
India and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) spinner Yuzvendra Chahal’s name has been floating around to be added to the Virat Kohli-led team list for T20 WC. The right-hander has performed exceptionally well for his franchise in the second leg of the IPL 2021. However, the source said that no decision on Chahal’s inclusion has been taken yet.
“No decision has been taken on Chahal. Unfortunately, Mumbai Indians had dropped Rahul Chahar from the playing XI. If Chahal will be asked to stay back as a cover will be decided once the selectors and team management discuss the situation,” the official said.
The report further added that the in-form speedster of IPL 2021, Umran Malik and Harshal Patel are also likely to stay back in the UAE as net bowlers for team India. Meanwhile, India will kick-start their T20 World Cup campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan on October 24.
