BCCI miffed with Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri for attending a public event

The Indian cricket team suffered a massive blow during day four of the fourth Test match between England and India. India’s head coach Ravi Shastri tested positive for the novel coronavirus on Sunday. The veteran was immediately isolated away from the rest of the Indian squad while all the members of the Indian team underwent RT-PCR tests twice.

Meanwhile, the other coaching staff including bowling coach Bharat Arun, physio Nitin Patel and fielding coach R Sridhar were deemed as the close contacts of Shastri and were asked to isolate themselves. While Arun and Sridhar tested positive on Monday, Nitin Patel continues to be in isolation.

It is now learned that the entire incident has left the Board of Control for Cricket in India upset. The Indian board believes Shastri contracted the deadly virus during the book launch event that he attended just before the Oval Test. The entire Indian team along with head coach and skipper Virat Kohli participated in a book-launch event and that has placed them under the scanner.

The Indian team hadn’t asked for permission for attending the crowded event from the BCCI or the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). Thus, the cricket board is likely to question Kohli and Shastri for the same.

“Photos from the event have been shared with the officials. The board will probe the matter. This incident has left the board embarrassed. The coach and the captain will be asked to explain the circumstances after the fourth Test at Oval. The team’s administrative manager Girish Dongre’s role is also under the scanner,” a top official told TOI.

“The Indian board is in touch with ECB and trying to ensure the series is completed without any further incidents. As of now, everyone is hoping that Shastri recovers soon. There is a selection meeting for the T20 World Cup on Wednesday. Maybe the matter will be raised there,” the official added.
