Sri Lankan leg spinner Wanindu Hasaranga has taken the second hattrick of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2021. Hasaranga’s hattrick, which spanned two overs, makes him the third Sri Lankan to achieve the feat in T20Is and only the second when it comes to spinners from the island nation.
Hasaranga dismissed in form Aiden Markram on the last ball of the 15th over as he castled the South African. Coming back in the 18th over, the Sri Lankan first dismissed set Temba Bavuma, who tried to tonk him over midwicket before sending Dwaine Pretorius packing for a golden duck to complete his hattrick.
Wanindu Hasaranga becomes only second bowler to take a T20 World Cup hattrcik
Sri Lankan spinner Wanindu Hasaranga is only the third bowler to pick up a T20 World Cup hattrick. Before him, the great Bret Lee had achieved the feat on the big stage. Lee had taken the maiden hattrick in T20 World Cup back in 2007 against Bangladesh. After 14 long years, Curtis Campher became the second bowler to emulate the feat in the Round 1 of the T20 World Cup and now Hasaranga has joined the elite list.
Despite Hasaranga’s heroics with the ball, Sri Lanka failed to get over the line. David Miller smashed two huge sixes to take South Africa to a thrilling win as they look to make their way to the semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2021. With the loss, Sri Lanka’s hopes of making it to the next round of the tournament are all but done.
