Rishabh Pant produced a knock for the ages in the previous Test that the Indian team played when he took apart the England bowling attack in the final Test of the four-match series at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The southpaw got a century in just 115 balls to rescue India from a position of great peril to one of strength. At the non-striker’s end, he received excellent company from Washington Sundar.

Sundar was also in exemplary touch in that match, but he was unlucky to miss out on a maiden century as he ran out of partners while being unbeaten in the 90s. Despite the same, he had done enough damage and it helped India secure their third victory of the series as they clinched it 3-1. There were some doubts creeping in after the loss in the first match at Chepauk with regard to qualification for the final of the World Test Championship (WTC), but India were clinical in the final three Tests.

One of the highlights of Rishabh Pant’s knock that day was an outrageous reverse-scoop shot that he hit off the bowling of none other than James Anderson – one of the best pacers of all time. The sheer nonchalance with which he did it by casually scooping him over a packed slip cordon received plenty of plaudits. Further, Pant was batting in his 90s at the time and it only showed what a fearless cricketer he was.

The man who had the best seat in the house to watch the shot was Washington Sundar from the other end. Today, he was asked by ESPNcricinfo about what his reaction was on watching the shot and he said, “I literally didn’t know how to react. More than anything, he was batting on 90 odd. He still managed to scoop over a couple of slips and gully. So I didn’t know how to react. That’s what he wanted to do and he was very successful.”

On being asked if Washington told Pant anything after the shot, the all-rounder said, “Nobody could say anything to him at that moment as he was in a different zone and just wanted to go after the England bowlers. He played an amazing knock after all.”

Both Washington Sundar and Rishabh Pant are a part of India’s squad for the WTC final and the series of England. The summit clash takes place on the 18th of June.
