The Commonwealth Games 2022 which will be held in the English city of Birmingham has included cricket for the first time ever. A women’s cricket tournament in the T20I format is being planned for the same. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has also announced the seven teams who have secured qualifications for the event based on their ranking.

The 2022 Commonwealth Games has been planned for July 27 to August 7 in 2022 and it is set to see 4,500 athletes taking part. A proposal to include cricket in 2018 was made by the ICC along with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) wherein it was agreed after voting that the sport would be included under the additional sport quota which is given in the Commonwealth Games rulebook.

The International Cricket Council took to its Twitter handle today to announce the list of seven teams to have qualified for the Commonwealth Games. The same is based on rankings and the likes of England, New Zealand, India, Australia, South Africa, Pakistan and West Indies have made the cut. The remaining teams will take part in a qualification tournament and its winner would join the seven to make a total of 8.

ICC Chief Executive Manu Sawhney while announcing the format of the tournament had said, “Cricket at the Commonwealth Games is a fantastic opportunity for us to continue to grow the women’s game globally. We are committed to accelerating this growth and maintaining the momentum we have created over the past few years, which most recently saw 86,174 fans packed into the MCG for the final of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2020.
