Amidst the media buzz of KaVontae Turpin’s arrest, the launch of Quarterback S2, and Patrick Mahomes’ body shape, there has been a recent development that has stunned not only the fans but also financial professionals.

Minnesota Vikings linebacker Dallas Turner has reportedly lost a staggering $240,000 in an elaborate banking scam. The 22-year-old rookie was convinced to wire the money to accounts controlled by fraudsters posing as bank officials, an incident now under active investigation by local authorities.

The Minnesota Star Tribune broke the story earlier this week, revealing that Turner fell victim to a phone scam back in February. According to court records, the caller pretended to be a representative from JPMorgan Chase and claimed that someone was attempting to impersonate Turner at a Chase branch in Arizona.

What followed was a step-by-step manipulation that led the young linebacker to transfer large sums of money under the illusion of protecting his assets. The fraudsters manipulated Turner into physically going to two different Chase branches and wired $120,000 to each account, unknowingly facilitating the theft. It wasn’t until a later conversation with a relative that he realized that he had been duped.

While the incident occurred months ago, details are only now surfacing as police move closer to filing charges. Although several suspects have reportedly been identified, the recovery of funds remains grim. As of now, only a fraction of the amount, less than $2,500, roughly one percent, has been retrieved by the authorities.

Bad news amid Dallas Turner’s efforts to avoid the ‘Bust’ label

Dallas Turner, who was drafted 17th overall by the Vikings in the 2024 NFL Draft, had recently signed a fully guaranteed four-year, $15.77 million contract. However, he had very few snaps in the season, which has fans questioning his worth, considering the lengths GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah went to draft the rookie.

A Bleacher Report scouting profile noted that his hand usage in finesse moves was still underdeveloped. The profile also noted that he often struggled to disrupt offensive tackles with consistent power. Additionally, it also emphasized that Turner could benefit from added size and strength to better anchor against more physically offensive linemen.

Though it wasn’t entirely shocking that Turner didn’t crack the starting lineup in his rookie season, it did raise a few eyebrows.

According to Pro Football Reference, the linebacker saw action on just 28 percent of the Vikings’ defensive snaps throughout the 2024 campaign, an unexpectedly low number for a first-round pick. The limited playing time is part of why Bleacher Report’s Matt Holder included him on a list of six draftees who need to bounce back in 2025 to avoid being labeled a bust.

The upcoming season is not gonna be a walk in the park either. There’s stiff competition from Andrew Van Ginkel and Jonathan Greenard, starting edge rushers from the past season. They both put out solid performances. Van Ginkel posted a career-high 11.5 sacks, earning both a Pro Bowl nod and second-team All-Pro honors.

Meanwhile, Greenard delivered his second consecutive double-digit sack season with 12. Furthermore, he was also selected for the Pro Bowl. There’s no doubt that the playing time for Turner would be limited and hard to earn. The fraud scam is no ideal amid this crucial career moment either.

The other draftees from the class of 2024 in Holder’s list are Darius Robinson (Arizona Cardinals), Tyler Guyton (Dallas Cowboys), Terrion Arnold (Detroit Lions), Jordan Morgan (Green Bay Packers), and Xavier Legette (Carolina Panthers).
