However, the Bosnian tennis player has spoken out regarding the matter and has stated that he was not disqualified from the match, but he chose to walk off voluntarily. He hit out at the media for showing him in a bad light and raising false accusations against him.

Damir Dzumhur left the court voluntarily, due to the behavior and decisions of the chief judge, which were neither objective nor correct. Another very important thing that can be read on the portals is that I threatened to kill someone? R U people aware of what this means and where it comes from? Where does this malice come from to say such things at all?,” Dzumhur said.

The media are expected to convey information correctly, objectively and accurately, but this time it was not. In the end, I apologize to my family & my loved ones and of course to those who support me for behaving so emotionally & for not showing strength, for showing once again that things like this can affect me to show my worse and weaker side,” he added.

What exactly happened that led to the walking off

Damir Dzumhur was up against Botic van de Zandschulp with the score reading 5-5 in the first set. The score read 40-40 on the Bosnian’s serve, when his forehand was called outside, which he believed had landed inside the court. Dzumhur dropped his racquet and started arguing with the chair umpire, and was eventually broken.

The action continued during the change of ends as he continued to argue with the umpire. He also received a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct. The Bosnian won the first point of the 12th game but received a penalty point due to his behavior on court. This further angered Dzumhur who put his racquets in his bag and walked off court.
