Daniil Medvedev had been in terrific form coming into 2021. He had won the Paris Masters, the ATP World Tour Final and then the ATP Cup. Infact, Medvedev had a winning streak of 20 matches going into the Finals of the Australian Open 2021. In the Australian Open Final Medvedev lost to Novak Djokovic.

Post the Australian Open, Daniil Medvedev won the Open 13, and reached the world no.2 ranking as well. But amid all this, Medvedev suffered a setback when he tested positive for COVID just ahead of the Monte Carlo Masters. He was quickly isolated, and set on a path to recovery. Elo is a superior rating system to the ranking formulas used by the ATP and WTA. The principle behind any Elo system is that each player’s rating is an estimate of their strength, and each match or tournament allows us to update that estimate. If a player wins, his/her rating goes up; if he/she loses, it goes down.

Which means, the higher the Elo rating, the tougher it is to beat that player. Daniil Medvedev has the highest Elo rating of 2127. Which means he is the toughest player to beat. At second position is Novak Djokovic with a Elo rating of 2123 and third is Rafael Nadal at 2106.

The more interesting bit is that the overall Elo is different from the Surface wise Elo. Which means Rafael Nadal, who is the toughest to beat on clay, has the highest Elo rating of 2052 on clay. Medvedev has the highest Elo rating on hard courts which stands at 2059. Novak Djokovic has the highest Elo on grass courts which is 1913.
