‘Even if I win Roland Garros, clay will never be my favorite surface’, says Medvedev
Daniil Medvedev
World No.3, Daniil Medvedev has been open about how he dislikes the clay and the discomfort he feels on the surface. The Russian is yet to win a big title on the clay in his career, and has not even got past the first round of the French Open.
Although he is the third seed at the Madrid Masters, he struggled to get past Alejandro Fokina in his opening round. During the course of the match, he was also spotted cribbing about the surface and how he doesn’t want to play anymore on it.
Later, a grumpy and unhappy Medvedev even said, “First of all, I don’t think beating me on clay is a ‘giant’ headline.” Over the years, many players on the tour have been vocal about their least favourite surfaces in front of the audience and media and have even expressed their displeasure.
Clay and Grass have had its critics
For instance, Australian Nick Kyrgios too has his reservations about the dirt. The mercurial players rarely plays on clay. But perhaps, the most famous one-liner critic, about a particular surface came from former World No.1, Ivan Lendl. The eight-time Grand Slam champion once famously said about Wimbledon, “Grass is for the cows.” Interestingly, Lendl could never win the All England Championships, despite making two finals. Former World No.1, Marat Safin too didn’t hold back in saying how Wimbledon was his least favourite surface.
Similarly, Medvedev didn’t refrain himself from sharing his thoughts on what he felt about clay. On being asked, whether he was happy after his opening round victory in Madrid. “No. Even if I win Roland Garros, probably when Rafa Nadal retires, clay will never be my favorite surface,” the Russian explained.”
Medvedev will take on Christian Garin today in the round of 16 at Caja Magica.
