Did Newcastle United end the relegation battle on Friday?
Newcastle United stunned the football world on Friday by defeating the third-placed Leicester City at King Power Stadium. Callum Wilson scored a brace after Joe Willock and Paul Dummett found the back of the net in the first half for the Toon Army.
On the other hand, Leicester City were devastated in the 73rd minute when the ball found the back of the net. Marc Albrighton and Kelechi Iheanacho scored two goals in the next 7 minutes to inspire a comeback. However, the Newcastle United players put their body in line to defend the two goal lead. Steve Bruce’s men came with a victory at King Power Stadium.
With a win against Brendan Rodgers’ side, Newcastle United moved to the 13th position with 39 points to their name. Not only they are out of the relegation battle but are also looking strong for a midtable finish. However, the win of Magpies might have ended the relegation battle as well.
How Newcastle United’s victory might have ended the relegation battle?
Newcastle United were in the 17th position before the ball was kicked-off. Fulham were nine points behind the team and had a realistic chance to survive the relegation with four games in hand. However, the Toon Army have distanced themselves from the relegation with all three points on Friday. On the other hand, Burnley have dropped to the 17th place with four games to game. They too have 36 points in their hand with four games to go. Fulham and West Bromwich Albion not only have to win their rest of four games but also have to pray that Burnley doesn’t accumulate more than three points in the last four games.
Remaining games for the last four teams on the Premier League table:
Position on the points table | Name of the team | 35th Gameweek | 36th Gameweek | 37th Gameweek | 38th Gameweek | Maximum points available | Current Points | Total points at the end of the season |
17 | Burnley | Fulham | Leeds United | Liverpool | Sheffield United | 12 | 36 | 48 (Assuming a win over Fulham) |
18 | Fulham | Burnley | Southampton | Manchester United | Newcastle United | 12 | 27 | 39 (Assuming a win over Burnley) |
19 | West Bromwich Albion | Arsenal | Liverpool | West Ham United | Leeds United | 12 | 26 | 38 |
20 | Sheffield United | Crystal Palace | Everton | Newcastle United | Burnley | 12 | 17 | 29 (Relegated) |
Burnley will face Fulham in the 35th Gameweek and can decide the fortunes of the 18th and 19th placed teams. A win for Fulham will keep the battle going whereas a win for Burnley will definitely end the hopes of West Bromwich Albion as well.
The win for Newcastle United might have ended the race of survival but also has ignited the dead top-four race. Leicester City have 63 points with three games in hand whereas Chelsea are hunting them with four games in hand and are just two points behind Foxes. A win against Manchester City can help them to leapfrog Leicester City and occupy the third spot. West Ham United are also in the top-four hunt with four games in hand. Foxes have a tough set of fixtures with the club playing against Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur in their last three games of the season.
