According to Novak Djokovic’s coach Marian Vajda, the Serb has had an incredible 2020 season, despite some hiccups and controversies. Djokovic started 2020 by going undefeated en route to his three title wins on-trot at the ATP Cup, The Australian Open and the Dubai Duty-Free Championship.

After the games began post Covid-19 lockdown, Djokovic saw a slight dip in his form as well as there were some controversies surrounding him too. In spite of the ups-and-downs, Djokovic ended the 2020 season with a record year ending sixth World No.1 ranking, tying him with Pete Sampras for the record.

Djokovic’s coach Marian Vajda believes, “Novak has done something incredible, being the year-end world No. 1 for a sixth time is a fantastic achievement. He has met the goal he set at the beginning of the season.”

In the second half of 2020, Djokovic was bogged by controversies. First, he received backlash for the Adria tour that he organized in the middle of the pandemic and then he himself contracted the virus.

“I appreciate that he achieved successful results even after the restart of the season. I was a little worried about how his fitness, he also overcame the coronavirus,” Vajda said.

Secondly, he was disqualified from the US Open for hitting a line judge.

“The tournament in New York was unfortunate due to the disqualification, otherwise he could have gotten far there as well. At the French Open, Rafa gave an excellent performance in the finals, he had an incredible length of strokes. Novak was not completely in his element,” the Croat added.

Despite the schedule of the Australian Open still to be disclosed, Vajda hopes that the Coronavirus restriction and subsequent precautionary measures will be the same in Australia as they were in France and USA.

“It will be very strenuous from an organizational point of view. We will see when the Australian Open starts and whether the preparatory tournaments will take place. It would be great if there was a bubble at the Australian Open like New York and Paris and everything can take place right on the campus in Melbourne,” Vajda said.
