Uncle Toni is often credited for setting Rafa down the right path when he was starting out. The duo worked together as mentor-mentee for 27 years. During a Spanish television show appearance, the World No.2 disclosed that he wouldn’t even have pursued tennis if it wasn’t for his uncle, Toni. In addition, the Spaniard added that Toni’s contribution to making Rafa the unbeatable giant that he is today can’t be measured.
To a question regarding the percentage of importance of Toni in Nadal’s career, the latter said, “I don’t know. I don’t think it can be valued in a percentage. Since we say that without him I would have possibly never played tennis, it is already a very high percentage.”
“He has been the person who has been with me from the beginning. Training me. He is the person who professionally helped me achieve success,” Nadal added.
“It is no less true that I have also had my father, my mother. And my family who were behind (me through the good times and bad),” the Spaniard concluded.
