Dustin Poirier headlined UFC 269 with Charles Oliviera fighting for the lightweight belt and losing to the champ at Round 3 via rear-naked choke. He was humble in defeat but you could see that he was devastated on missing out on the belt again after losing the last time to then-champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Poirier sat down for an interview with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour where he discussed his loss to Oliviera and what had gone wrong in that 3rd round.

When asked what he could have done differently in that 3rd round, ‘The Diamond’ replied, “Honestly my shoulders were a little bit fatigued. I don’t get tired. I never feel that but my shoulders were a little bit fatigued, but that’s also something I don’t do is hold another man for five minutes waiting for a stand-up or thinking to myself of a way out. I usually go for the finish, I try to create space and scramble, I do good in action, so holding him like that and him posturing up the whole-time kind of burned my shoulders out. I remember starting the round saying ‘Wow my shoulders are a little fatigued’, I think that slowed me down a little bit. I threw a lazy hook or an overhand that I remember I need to go back and watch and he might have level changed or my legs or grab my body under a hook but I was probably a little bit slower than normal. I don’t know but he got to my back quick.”

Dustin said that he’s so much better than how he performed and says that it sucks that he might never get that chance to call himself a world champion.

Dustin Poirier took to Twitter to share his thoughts on what he wants to do and fans were worried and concerned when he tweeted that he was unsure of what’s next.

Poirier lost his second chance at a UFC title and he looked emotional during the post-fight conference. He said that he’ll look at himself in the mirror and ask himself, “Do I want to do it again? Do I want to go down that road again?”

Fans have suggested that he change weight class or even take up lessons on improving his ground movements but whatever it may be, no one wants to see ‘The Diamond’ go into retirement. But there is some good news for fans to cherish with Poirier saying that the only fight that intrigues him right now is about Nate Diaz.

Looks like we might just have the chance to see this thriller go down.
