Two of India’s most celebrated female sprinters, Dutee Chand and Hima Das are set to go toe to toe. The star sprinters will be facing off in the women’s 100m sprint event at Indian Grand Prix (IGP) 2. The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) tweeted informing about the big match up which will be coming up at NIS Patiala on 25th February 2021.
“Entry list suggests a contest between @DuteeChand & @HimaDas8 in Women’s 100m sprint in Indian Grand Prix-1 #IGP2021 at NIS Patiala on 25th February 2021. Entry list on http://indianathletics.in shortly,” the tweet read.
The Indian Grand Prix was the first national-level track and field event for the seniors in more than a year. Muhammed Anas (Kerala) finished second, behind Krishnakumar Satish Rane (Maharashtra) in the 100m event. Amiya Kumar Mallick (Odisha) ran the slower B Race to clock 10.89 for his 100m run. Akoria Rajiv (Tamil Nadu) finished was the fastest in the men’s 200m event.
Dutee Chand shines in IGP 1 as Hima Das gives it a miss
Dutee Chand clocked 11.51 seconds, followed by Karnataka’s T Daneshwari (11.86 seconds) and Maharashtra’s Diandra Dudley Valladares (11.97). But, the Odisha-born sprinter is yet to qualify for the Tokyo Games, with the cut-off for the event at 11.15 seconds. On the other hand, Das gave the IGP 1 a miss but will be back at the second.
It was surprising to see some top athletes giving the Grand Prix a miss. Two more Grand Prix meets are scheduled leading up to the Federation Cup in Patiala from March 15. And one would expect a better showing in the upcoming two competitions.
