Apple had faced a trial that threatens to upend its rock-hard control over the App Store, which brings in billions of dollars each year while feeding more than 1.6 billion iPhones, iPads, and other devices. Epic, on the other hand, is an American video game and software developer and publisher based in Cary, North Carolina, also earning whopping billions from its game proceedings.

Fortnite was removed from the App Store in August 2020, when developer Epic Games added a new option to the in-game store that allowed players to purchase V-Bucks, the paid in-game currency, directly from Epic.

Nvidia and Epic Games have been promising that Fortnite would come back to iOS through GeForce Now running through Safari’s web browser since November 2020, when the service first launched on Apple’s hardware.

Apple and Google had decided to take 30% cuts from the total revenue on their App stores. But Epic Games had decided to set up a different system for Fortnite where users could directly pay Epic, or choose to make a larger payment via the App Store.

Fortnite remains barred from Apple’s App Store and may be unavailable natively on iOS for up to five years, according to Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney. According to Nvidia, beta sign-ups start today, with “selected members” set to get access later in January.

The company says that the Fortnite beta will be a “limited time” process but that “we do not have an exact timeline for how long it will last.”
