The Grand Theft Auto series permanently altered open-world video games. Due to its immense success, Rockstar Games is now developing GTA V’s sequel. GTA 6 will be the title of the next installment of the series. Rockstar Games will preserve almost all of what players can accomplish in GTA 5 while adding much more in GTA 6. Although right now, this proposition doesn’t sound too good. Rumors suggest that GTA 6 may not feature dedicated servers, similar to its predecessor.

Popular Rockstar Games insider Tez2 has reported that a few years back, Take-Two Interactive rejected a deal regarding dedicated servers. A dedicated server has been in players’ demand for a long. Even after a decade of continuous success, GTA Online still doesn’t own a dedicated server. They, instead, work on a peer-to-peer model. This has led to many problems, from hacking to security breaches and even DDoS attacks. So, the studio’s turning down a dedicated server is a serious issue for GTA 6’s potential online mode.

Although there has been no confirmation of GTA 6 having an online mode, gamers seem positive. Rockstar Games has received massive success from GTA Online and is working on DLC content for the game to date. Moreover, this shows immense promise in the online mode of the most anticipated upcoming installment of the GTA series.

Tez2 claimed in a comment on GTAForums on May 30 that Take-Two Interactive had rejected a dedicated server deal. This happened a few years back. Take-Two took this decision because it’s cost-prohibitive to operate it annually. Considering this was a few years back, players thought it was for GTA Online. However, it may as well be regarding GTA 6. This is because GTA 6 has been in development for almost a decade now.

The absence of dedicated servers is deteriorating a game. We’ve all seen how hacker and cheater-infested GTA Online is, at least on the PC version. This is due to P2P models’ very lax security, which makes them far more vulnerable to hacking or other attacks compared to dedicated servers. Another insider, Spider-vice, has expanded on this P2P model. They said,

“Multiplyer Games doesn’t need to be fully dedicated servers for everything as long as the right things are being controlled by servers.”

Although the company tries to control the servers, it’s practically impossible due to the security holes. And this also leads to worse execution of overall gameplay. However, gamers should take note that the rumors of Take-Two rejecting the deal are some years old. The current scenario can be entirely different. However, whatever it may be, we’ll know with a solidified release of any information from the company or developers themselves.
