Nintendo revealed that its newest game, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, sold 10 million copies in just 3 days, making it the fastest-selling game in the long-standing The Legend of Zelda franchise.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which was released back in 2017. Tears of the Kingdom seems to outshine its predecessor in every way, as players shower praise.
Even though Zelda: Tears of Kingdom had such a massive opening Nintendo seems to be going through a rough patch when it comes to the sale of Switch. In the recent financial reveal by Nintendo, they said, ” Nintendo Switch has entered its seventh year since launch. While it will become more challenging to maintain the same sales momentum as before, our goal is to have more consumers continue to play [Nintendo Switch] for longer.”
However, with the release of the new Zelda game, the momentum may start to shift.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom can outsell its competitors
According to Nintendo’s official data, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom sold more than 4 million copies in the Americas alone. This made it the fastest-selling Nintendo game in America. Moreover, the Zelda series as a whole has sold 130 million copies this March alone. It won’t be long before the game breaks almost all possible records in gaming history.
Furthermore, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom looks set to beat the likes of Hogwarts Legacy in sales. One of WB’s best releases in recent years, Hogwarts Legacy, sold over 12 million copies in its first two weeks. Moreover, already touted as one of the games of the year, Hogwarts Legacy looks set to be beaten if the trajectory of sales remains the same.
Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of sales, marketing, and communications, Devon Pritchard, had this to say about Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’s massive early success: “Many players are returning to [Hyrule] with all its new mysteries and possibilities and with the record-breaking launch of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom for [Nintendo] Switch, we cannot wait to see what they will create in the game and the stories they will share next.”
Not just in America, Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom even had a massive release in the UK as well. Market analysis company GfK revealed that Tears of Kingdom had the biggest physical release of any game in the UK in 2023. Moreover, it also became the second-biggest release in UK’s history.
