The COVID-19 pandemic brought the world to a standstill. There was no respite for anything, even for sports. Tennis witnessed a similar fate, and that to an extent, that the oldest running grand slam tournament, the Wimbledon, had to be called off for 2020. It was for the first time after World War II that tennis would be deprived of its most iconic tournament.

Former World No.5 Eugenie Bouchard says it hurts not to play the Wimbledon but also feels it’s right to cancel it due to the prevailing conditions around the globe.

A right decision: Bouchard on Wimbledon getting canceled

Eugene misses her favorite tournament, the Wimbledon.

It doesn’t come as a surprise when someone says that the Wimbledon is his/her top priority, despite being sometimes criticized for being rigid with its traditions. Eugenie Bouchard is no different.

“Wimbledon is and always remain my favorite grand slam tournament. Its iconic matches, traditions all fascinate me. I have always dreamed of winning it since childhood.” said the Canadian, showing her immense love for the event. However, she added that the authorities took a right call of scrapping off the event.

“Look, not only me, but every tennis lover is utterly disappointed of Wimbledon being scrapped off. However, it is also true that it doesn’t make any sense to place it in such a catastrophic condition. Its an important tournament but not as important to risk everyone’s life.” Bouchard added.

Bouchard has a rich history with Wimbledon. Most of her success has come here only. In 2012, she won the Wimbledon Juniors title and two years later, in 2014, she reached the Ladies’ final, eventually losing to the champion Petra Kvitova. So the grass-court event can be called as Eugene’s happy hunting ground!
