Eden Hazard is all set to take the reigns of Belgium national football team for the Euro 2020 which is scheduled to kick-off on June 11th in Rome.
Hazard has struggled to deliver as per his expectations since joining Real Madrid from Chelsea in June 2019. The 30-year-old recently returned to action following a muscle injury, and he has only appeared in 21 games for Madrid this summer in all tournaments. So far, he has only four goals and one assist to his credit. However, Martinez’s move to appoint Hazard as the skipper was most likely based on his stellar international record rather than his performances for Real Madrid in 2020-21.
The dynamic winger has appeared in 106 games for Belgium scoring 32 goals in the process and was the star performer in their most recent big tournament appearance, the 2018 World Cup.
Belgium national football team will be aiming for gold, as the world’s number one ranked international team enters the tournament as one of the dark horses. They are yet to win an international trophy, but with several of their so-called “Golden Generation” players reaching retirement age, this might be their best opportunity. Who knows how high they can go with superstars like Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard, and Romelu Lukaku in the squad.
At Euro 2016, they had a dismal campaign, falling out in the quarter-finals after losing to Wales. Martinez took over the command after the competition in France and guided Belgium to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals. The prime area of worry in this team are fitness concerns and a shaky defense, but expectations remain high.
Belgium national football team’s campaign in Euro 2020
Belgium comfortably qualified for the Euro 2020 winning all their games and ending above the likes of Russia and Scotland.
They are placed in Group B for the mega event and will start their campaign against Russia on 12th June in Saint Petersburg followed by a contest against Denmark in Copenhagen on 17th June. Belgium will end their group stage after meeting Finland on 21st June in Saint Petersburg.
