Italy had to overcome a resilient and hardworking Austria side, who were well determined and left no backlogs, on their way to qualify for the Quarter finals in the Euro 2020. Austria made Italy to toil and took the game into extra time as Italy scored two late goals with a reply to win the hard fought match 2-1 at Wembley. Italy opened the scoring in the 95th minute through Chiesa, who was a live wire since he came on and Pessina doubled the lead ten minutes later, but Austria managed to pull one back through Kaladzic but failed to find another, as Italy won the day.
Here are our player ratings for the Italy Vs Austria round of 16 match at Wembley.
Italy Player Ratings
Gianluigi Donnarumma – 7/10
Didn’t have much to do in the first half. Made a string of brilliant saves in the extra time to prevent the match from going into tie breaker.
Giovani Di Lorenzo – 6/10
Continuously bothered by an overlapping Alaba on his side of the field. Didn’t venture forward much, sticking to his defensive duties. Couldn’t check Alaba’s jump during Austria’s disallowed goal.
Leonardo Bonucci – 6.5/10
Made some crucial interventions and clearances. Kept on his toes by Arnautovic throughout the game.
Francesco Acerbi – 7/10
Good with the ball playing capabilities and distribution. Defended well too, keeping out whatever came his way. Almost scored an own goal with a awkward back pass. Assisted Italy’s second goal as flicked the ball to Pessina while going to ground.
Leonardo Spinazzola – 7.5/10
Constantly troubled the Austrian defence by making runs down the flanks and getting behind their lines whenever given the chance. Tried taking some shots and made accurate crosses into the box. Assisted Italy’s first goal with a beautiful lofted ball for Chiesa at the far post.
Nicolo Barella – 6/10
Was decent but lacked that cutting edge. Good shot in the first half to bring out a save from Bachmann. Was booked for too much words and subbed later on.
Jorginho – 6.5/10
Did what he does the best, sitting deep and cutting the enemy lines and pushing forward whenever given the chance. However, misjudged some passes and and not much effective attacking wise.
Marco Verratti – 5.5/10
Wasn’t in his usual best. First half was good as he made 4 key passes and played some beautiful through balls, but faded in the second half before being subbed.
Domenico Berardi – 6/10
Worked hard but with little impact. Made good runs down the flanks but couldn’t eke out something.
Ciro Immobile – 6.5/10
Saw some decent chances fall his way but couldn’t capitalize. Failed to control a high ball over the top as he came 1 on 1 with the goalkeeper in the first half. Had a long range stunner brush off the post.
Lorenzo Insigne – 6/10
Not at his usual best. Tried making an impact but to fail. Much more expected of him.
Manuel Locatelli – 7/10
Matteo Pessina – 7.5/10
Scored Italy’s second goal with a beautiful finish to the far corner from a narrow angle.
Federico Chiesa – 8/10
Super sub! Controlled a beautiful timed ball over the top, took two touches to set himself up, before volleying the ball into the far corner. Live wire!
Andrea Belotti – 6/10
Austria Player Ratings
Daniel Bachmann – 7/10
Kept Austria in the game. Impeccable reaction time to save Barella’s shot early on with an extended foot, made some good diving saves later on. Had nothing much to do for the two goals.
Stefan Lainer – 7/10
Was resolute and determined as he had a good game against Insigne and Verratti. But little threat going forward.
Aleksandar Dragovic – 6.5/10
Though threatened often, he stood out solid. Cleared whatever came his way.
Martin Hinteregger – 6.5/10
Made crucial tackles and clearances to stop Italy from breaking forward. Good challenge to stop Berardi in the second half.
David Alaba – 7/10
Immense workrate – both attacking and defensive. Defended when needed and pushed forward down the flanks when given the opportunity, teammates relied on him mostly. Good headed ball to assist Arnautovic for but was disallowed unfortunately. Wasn’t well positioned to stop Italy’s first goal.
Xaver Schlager – 6.5/10
Fell back to aid his defence. Helped his team in tight situations, started some counter-attacks. With good first time balls.
Florian Grillitsch – 6.5/10
Tireless in the midfield, battling with the Italians. Sat deep and sniffed out and nulled any danger that came their way.
Marcel Sabitzer – 7/10
His team’s attacks went mostly through him, making some good runs and playing fine passes, driving forward with the ball. Had a golden chance saved in the extra time.
Konrad Laimer – 6.5/10
Had to fall back constantly to check Spinazzola’s runs and aided the defence. Pressed high up the pitch.
Marko Arnautovic – 7/10
Earned himself a booking early on with a reckless challenge. Made a delightful solo run into the box, shoving and shrugging past three Italian defenders, but had no-one to pass. Good header for the goal with was unfortunately ruled out due to offside.
Christoph Baumgartner – 6/10
Began brightly, made nice runs and troubled the Italian backline. Took on a few defenders and produced a good delivery in the box but with no result.
Alessandro Schopf – 6/10
