A long and illustrious career ended on Friday. Roger Federer had announced that the ongoing Laver Cup will be his last event and that he will no longer play in Grand Slams or on the tour. His final match was a double game for Team Europe with Rafael Nadal against Team World’s Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe.

Unfortunately, even with the world behind him, Federer could not win his last match, and the game ended in a 9-11 tiebreak defeat for him and Nadal. Emotions finally came to the surface for everyone as the match ended, and Federer broke down in tears giving his interview.

It was a very emotional evening for the whole tennis world, and there were more than a few teary-eyed faces at home and in the crowd. Federer could not hold back his emotions, even though he insisted they were ‘happy’ tears to his family. Even longtime rival Rafael Nadal burst into tears.

Like Rafael Nadal, his fellow Spaniard Carlos Sainz is a Real Madrid fan. Aside from his exploits on the track and his beloved golf, Sainz also has an interest in tennis, where he understandably supports his compatriot. Despite the longtime rivalry between Federer and Nadal, they also share great mutual respect, and Sainz has nothing but that for the Swiss player.

Carlos Sainz has often taken to social media to congratulate Rafael Nadal, and Nadal has done the same, but this time the social media story was for Roger Federer. Taking to Instagram, the Spaniard shared a video of Federer posted on the Laver Cup’s own page.

Sainz thanked Federer for the pleasure of watching him play the sport he loves: “It’s been an absolute pleasure to watch you play all these years! Thank you!”

Carlos Sainz also follows ‘thefedererexpress‘ on the social media platform, which is an updates page on Roger Federer, so the Spaniard clearly has an interest in Federer, aside from the expected interest that a supporter has for their chosen athlete’s rival.
