James Vowles appreciated George Russell for this fantastic piece of defence in the Spanish Grand Prix to extend Max Verstappen’s victory in Barcelona. But the strategist mentioned ‘lady luck’ as a helping hand over Russell’s showcase defence. The upgraded W-13 still lacked pace as compared to Red Bull and Ferrari, but still had a great finish to the weekend.

It was more interesting with the performance George got to that W-13 to stop Max to take the lead after Charles DNF, he made the plunge on turn 3 even after Max almost crossed him and stayed in the lead. But with the swap of the drivers and the strategy caused Russell his position, but it was an overall performance by the young Brit.

A part of it is to be credited to the DRS issues Max was going through, said James in Mercedes’ debrief video“George did an incredible job at defending.”

He continued “It may not have been too evident on television but his DRS was opening absolutely fine on the run down to Turn 10. There were other laps where Verstappen wasn’t as close and that’s where the DRS wasn’t opening.”

“So, to answer the question: part of it is just an incredible amount of racing skill that George has inherently and the second part of it is a little bit of lady luck on our side” admitted the Mercedes journalist.

George Russell is a prodigy and a champion in waiting, as considered by people, and he didn’t disappoint any of these words when he was added to the Mercedes group.

The Brit has been a part of two podiums this season and is the only driver to finish on points and finish in the top 5, in every race of the season. He is currently P4 in the championship ahead of Carlos Sainz and 11 points behind Sergio Perez.

He has completely dominated over his teammate this season, many times due to the safety car luck, but in any case, the 7-time world champion has failed to deliver a big result this season.

Mercedes after the struggles from porpoising in the opening stages of the season has completely or almost completely solved all of the ground effect problems in the Spanish Grand Prix. And that was seen with the performance of the silver arrow in Barcelona. So it would be safe to assume the 2021 champions are on the right track now.
