F1 has condemned the shocking views shared by Bernie Ecclestone on racism and the Ukraine-Russia war. The British business magnate has been known for making controversial remarks time and again, and has unsurprisingly gone on to do that again. Recently, a controversy that has sparked a debate around the world has been Nelson Piquet’s racist remark on the seven time world champion, Lewis Hamilton.
It has been reported that the three time world champion, Nelson Piquet, called Lewis Hamilton the N-word. This led to Lewis getting support from celebrities and fans across the world. But, Bernie Ecclestone was definitely not one of them as he felt that the Brit was making a big deal out of the whole situation and should brush it aside.
F1 was having none of it as it condemned the statement saying, “At a time when unity is needed to tackle racism and inequality, we completely disagree with Bernie Ecclestone’s comments that have no place in Formula 1 or society.”
“Mr. Ecclestone has played no role in Formula 1 since he left our organisation in 2017, his title Chairman Emeritus, being honorific, expired in January 2020.”
Bernie Ecclestone faces backlash from F1 after his shocking comments
But, the businessman didn’t stop there as he made yet another controversial statement backing the acts of Russia invading the state of Ukraine. The war has had a horrible impact on the people of Ukraine as more than one third of the people have been displaced and around 14,000 people have died in the event. Despite all of this, Bernie Ecclestone feels that it’s Ukraine’s fault as they should have listened to the Kremlin and not acted on their own accord.
F1 quickly leaped to Ukraine’s defence and issued yet another statement saying, “The comments made by Bernie Ecclestone are his personal views and are in very stark contrast to position of the modern values of the sport.”
The whole world has been shocked by the kind of opinion Bernie Ecclestone has shared on the two events which look and sound wrong on the face of it. F1 should be commended for condemning the businessman and sending a strong message to the world.
