“A little bit luck will go his way eventually,” Toto Wolff backs Lewis Hamilton ahead of the Spanish GP

The 2022 season of Formula 1 has completed 5 rounds and has provided some promising signs for the season ahead. The sport sets up its tents in Barcelona for the sixth round. The story so far for the German racing stable, Mercedes has been a bitter sweet one. The team developed an underperforming car which has held them back from fighting for the championship this season.

In the present season, the tale on the two sides of the Mercedes garage has been different. The new recruit, George Russell has been highly opportunistic and has not finished below P5 in any race so far. On the other side of the garage, Lewis Hamilton has not been as comfortable with the W13. The seven time world champion has fallen behind the leaders in the championship and does not seem to catch a break. Hamilton has been twice caught out by the safety car which has resulted in him losing position in the season.

Toto Wolff confident about a Mercedes comeback

Last race weekend out in Miami, Mercedes delivered a strong result with a P5 and P6 finish. The German boss, Toto Wolff reflected on it by saying “During the practice session on Friday we saw flashes of the car’s true potential. The timing [of the safety car] was tricky for Lewis, who has been driving strongly all weekend and was on his way to a P5. I’m sure in the remainder of the season a little bit luck will go his way eventually.”

The 8 time constructor champions are pushing flat out to turn the tide in the current season. Wolff further analysed their performance by adding “To talk in basketball terms; we are going to Barcelona at the end of the first quarter. We know that if we have turned our lessons into strong performances on the track there will be plenty of playing time left.”

The 2022 season still entails a prospect of 18 races yet to come. It would be a mistake to count Mercedes out of the championship as they have shown their competence for a huge time in the sport. The team sit in P3 in the constructors world championship and are determined to bounce back at Barcelona.
