With the new safety protocols in place and thanks to the endless efforts of the race Marshalls, people often forget how dangerous motorsports can be. As one of the most risky sports pursuits in the world, Formula 1 has seen several incidents over the years that have even resulted in some heart-breaking casualties of talented racers. But the accidents are not just limited to the pinnacle of motorsports as the junior category drivers face these dangers at times. For Formula 3 driver Paul Aaron, the recently-held Macau race was just a reminder of that.

Estonian racer Paul Aaron got into F3 in 2023 after spending 2 years as a Formula Regional European Championship or FRECA driver. It must be noted that 18-year-old FRECA racer from Max Verstappen‘s home country, Dilano Van’t Hoff, died earlier this year due to a fatal on-track accident. Aaron took part in the F3 showpiece race in Macau and was running in P5 when he crashed into the barriers at Paiol, the left-hander that comes after Solitude Esses at the 3.8 mile-long Guia Circuit.

In the fiery accident that followed, Paul Aaron’s car broke in half. His rear axle caught fire due to the heavy impact of the crash and burst into flames. A red flag situation was instantly called and safety card came out. Fortunately, Aaron got out of his car unharmed and thus, he managed to survive the scary incident. Later on, he left his comments on the mishap, as reported by Autosport.

After the crash, I was quite confused. I didn't know what happened because the car reacted very unpredictably, which is explained by the rear toe-link. It happened so fast. And when I saw the flames, I thought I was on fire!

Paul Aaron’s Macau crash brings back memories of Romain Grosjean’s Bahrain GP ‘fireball’ incident

Prema racer Paul Aaron was involved in a fiery on-track accident at the Macau Grand Prix recently. And it was eerily similar to former F1 driver Romain Grosjean‘s crash in Bahrain a couple of years ago. It was supposed to be the Frenchman’s last season before he left Haas and possibly retired, but he could not even finish the rest of his races due to the accident which charred his fingers.

After two disappointing years with Haas, he was at odds with his team boss Guenther Steiner and was dropped from the squad alongside Kevin Magnussen at the end of 2020. Magnussen was later reinstated in the team driver role after Nikita Mazepin being ousted a year into his contract. As of now, Romain Grosjean has built a presence in IndyCar.

Paul Aaron did admit he went for some risks at the Macau Grand Prix, which is held at one of the most tricky circuits in the world. He commented that his car was ‘missing speed on the straight’ and to make up for that, he was going fast in the corners. That is how he ran into the barriers and the race had to be called off.
