Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc in Imola Sprint race

Max Verstappen snatched a fantastic victory in the first sprint race of the 2022 season. The Red Bull driver who started on pole position initially lost the lead to Ferrari of Charles Leclerc. Leclerc led the race until the 20th lap of the sprint when Verstappen regained his position.

Sergio Perez claimed P3 after starting P7 while Leclerc’s teammate Carlos Sainz made a great recovery from P10 to eventually finish the race in 4th position. The McLarens of Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo finished P6 and P7 after missing out on FP2 due to issues in their cars.

Valtteri Bottas and Kevin Magnussen finished on points with their P7 and P8. While Mick Schumacher who will start 10th in the Emilia Romagna GP stands a chance to claim his first F1 points as he impressed many with his overtaking manoeuvres.

How F1 Twitter reacted to Max Verstappen’s win in the Imola GP sprint

Max Verstappen’s fight to regain first was not the only highlight of the race. Alfa Romeo of Zhou Guanyu suffered a collision with AlphaTauri of Pierre Gasly in the first lap of the race ending his race early. While Kevin Magnussen received a Black and white flag for weaving on the straights. Fernando Alonso received the same in the 16th lap for blocking Valtteri Bottas.

Both Mercedes had another poor show as neither George Russell nor Lewis Hamilton managed to make it to top-10. They finished P11 and P14 respectively. Sebastian Vettel who started in 9th was not able to fend off the DRS train formed behind him, eventually finishing P13.
