Mercedes’s Lewis Hamilton has faced a disappointing start to the 2022 season. The Former World Champion who was on the search for his 8th title has had to battle the midfield for mere points. And in the Emilia Romagna GP, it was evident that Mercedes and Lewis were not competent to contend for the Championship with the current state of the W13.

The 7-time World Champion was knocked out of Qualifying in Q2 in the first sprint race of the season held in Imola. He finished P14 in the sprint race and after a gruelling 63 laps of the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari, scored no points after finishing P13 in the main race.

Despite the difficult period for the Silver Arrows, Sky Sports’ F1 Pundit Johnny Herbert believes that Lewis Hamilton’s presence and added experience in the garage can inspire the team to a comeback later in the season.

Johnny Herbert on Lewis Hamilton: “the proof in the pudding was last year.

Mercedes’s Lewis Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton spent most of the race trapped behind the AlphaTauri of Pierre Gasly. He had to endure the embarrassment of blue flags in the 41st lap after Race winner and 2021 title rival Max Verstappen lapped him. But Johnny Herbert says the Briton’s determination and skill will come in handy to Mercedes as the rest of the season unfolds.

Herbert said, “I think what Lewis has always been really good at doing is being a leader. I think that first kicked off when he joined McLaren with Fernando Alonso and how he was able to develop himself and mould himself within the team and that is exactly what he has been able to do at Mercedes.”

He added, “Even when you are winning you still have to keep that motivation going and the proof in the pudding was last year. It looked like it was going to be a runaway victory for Red Bull in the early and middle part of the season and it turned around and that just shows you how driven and how important he is for the team. You can never rule out Lewis, you can never rule out Mercedes.”

Lewis’ Finish in Imola was his lowest finish and the first race where he scored no points despite finishing since the 2021 Azerbaijan GP. Even Team Principal Toto Wolff apologised to Hamilton on the radio after the race, for the car he had to drive labelling it unfit to challenge for the Championship.
