Suspended Premier League referee David Coote’s recently surfaced video of him sniffing white powder has caught social media by storm. He is already serving suspension, following investigations into his remarks about Jurgen Klopp, in a previous video. 

A recent video of David Coote appeared, showing the VAR specialist sniffing a mysterious white powder while officiating at the 2024 Euros. In the eight-second clip that was reportedly filmed on 6 July this year, Coote can be seen using an American banknote to snort a four-inch line of the same. It was after the quarter-final match between Spain and Germany, where Coote was a supporting VAR official. He had sent the clip to an unnamed friend after capturing it at a hotel in Frankfurt, who later leaked it in the media.

The controversial clip has emerged just days after Coote was suspended by the Professional Game Match Officials Ltd. (PGMOL) for derogatory comments about ex-Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp. He had labelled the German manager as ‘arrogant’ and ‘a c*nt’. After the video circulated on the media, UEFA and FA initiated investigations against Coote, while also taking him off the roster for the upcoming matches. Previously, Coote had branded Everton’s home ground, Goodison Park, as the ‘worst place to referee’.

A PGMOL representative informed provided details of the investigation, while also highlighting Coote’s welfare. Coote’s friend had also mentioned about his addiction to drugs. He also added that the referee often consumed them during big EPL matches and tournaments.

Football fans expressed shock after a video of VAR specialist David Coote appeared on social media, of him sniffing. This has raised some serious concerns regarding match officials in the Premier League, as well as the officiating standards.

Fans shared their reactions on social media, with some of them saying that referees are getting worse. Some fans hilariously stated that all other Premier League referees might be taking drugs, similar to Coote. A few others, however, termed it as a ‘witch-hunt’ against referees. PGMOL, the body investigating the incident, have reportedly confirmed that they were aware of David Coote’s drug abuse. It remains to be seen what lies ahead for the VAR official, who is currently facing suspension.
