A massive brawl broke out at MetLife Stadium after the New England Patriots linebacker Christian Elliss hit the New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart. Dart landed awkwardly on the side.

A minute after Marcus Jones scored a 94-yard punt return touchdown, Dart took the ball to get the Giants rolling. He nearly secured a first down but was denied by the onrushing Elliss.

Elliss rammed into Dart from the side, sending the Giants’ rookie quarterback flying inside the dugout. Theo Johnson was the first player to react. The angry Giants tight end confronted Elliss. Fortunately, teammates and coaches quickly de-escalated the situation.

Johnson’s actions came back to haunt the Giants. The referee slapped them with an unnecessary roughness penalty and awarded 15 yards to the Patriots.

Jaxson Dart needs to start listening to the advice about protecting himself better

Johnson and the other Giants players were right to be angry with Elliss. On the other hand, Dart took the risk of staying in bounds when it would have been smarter for him to step out of play. A third down is better than contracting a concussion or worse, broken bones.

For context, Dart sat out the last two games while going through the concussion protocol. According to reports, the 22-year-old had been evaluated for a concussion four times prior to ending up on the protocol.

Several former Giants players and doctors suggested he adjust his running style during games.

[Dart’s] got to protect himself. That’s not all on the coach calling these runs. You watch [Jalen] Hurts run — and he hardly ever takes a big shot. He knows when to get down. He plays low. He gets out of bounds.

Former NFL head coach Jay Gruden recently said (H/T: NJ.com)

Former Raiders and Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden, who is also a frequent contributor to Barstool Sports, asked Dart to slide and step out of bounds more ahead of Week 1 football. Dart promised to follow his advice. Guess he hasn’t learned his lesson yet.

Speaking with reporters after the game on Monday, Dart revealed that he “appreciates” all the concern about his health, but “my game is aggressive, so I am not gonna just change how I play the game.”

The Giants lost the game 15-33. They were already eliminated from playoff contention; the outcome mattered little. Regardless, a win would have looked great on Dart’s resume. Defeating the AFC number one seed is certainly something to brag about to his peers.

Dart racked up 17 completions from 24 pass attempts for 139 yards (70.4%), 1 touchdown and also ran 4 times for 20 yards. His favorite target was Wan’Dale Robinson, who caught 7 passes, while running back Devin Singletary rushed 12 times for 68 yards and scored 1 touchdown.

After 10 starts, Dart has accumulated 145 completions from 228 pass attempts for 1556 yards, 11 passing touchdowns, 3 interceptions and 7 rushing touchdowns.
