La Liga has always been blessed with great goalkeepers over the years ever since its inception. In this article we take a look at the Top 5 goalkeepers in La Liga history.
Andoni Zubizarreta- Alaves, Athletic Bilbao, Barcelona and Valencia
Andoni Zubizarreta or Zubi is one of the best keepers in the history of La Liga and was active during the 1980s from 1980 to 1998. During his playing days he played for heavyweight Spanish teams FC Barcelona, Valencia and Athletic Bilbao. He made a record for most clean sheets in La Liga history and the all-time record of most appearance in the league with an incredible sum of 622 games. His best season on personal levels was at the 1986-1987 season in which he conceded only 29 goals in 43 matches for Barcelona.
Iker Casillas- Real Madrid
Real Madrid and Spanish legend Iker Casillas was a phenomenon during his time at the Los Blancos for over 15 years since his arrival as a teenage kid. He lifted the La liga title 5 times and had a Zamora trophy awarded for conceding the least goals in the year. Casillas also won the Spanish super cup 4 times and the Copa del Rey twice during his legendary spell at the club.
Victor Valdes- FC Barcelona
Victor Valdes was an out and out FC Barcelona keeper and played for the Blaugranas from the years 2004 to 2016 having won numerous titles for his side in 387 appearances. Valdes won the Zamora trophy on 5 occasions and the La Liga Goalkeeper of the season award in 2 of the years. Playing for one of the successful teams in the history of football, he won it all for his clubs including the UEFA Champions League, La Liga, Copa del Rey the Super Cup.
Santiago Canizares- Real Madrid, Elche, Celta Vigo and Valencia
La Liga fans of the earlier 2000s would recognise the blonde goalkeeper Santiago Canizares, who played for the best teams in La Liga in Real Madrid and Valencia. He made a total of 500 appearances at the club level with most of them coming for Valencia during the years 1998-2008. Cañizares won the Zamora Trophy four times in his career, establishing his place in the list of Best Goalkeepers in La Liga history. He is the third in the list of goalkeepers with most Zamora Trophies making him one of the top 5 goalkeepers in La Liga of all time. He won the La liga trophy 4 times across his career and was part of Valencia’s most successful Champions League season in 2000-01 where they finished runners up.
Jan Oblak – Atletico Madrid
One of the top keepers in the World in the modern era, Jan Oblak also makes it into the top 5 goalkeepers in La Liga and has been one of the top performers of Atletico Madrid since he made his debut in 2014. He went on to lift the La Liga trophy twice in 2014 and in 2021. He has also lifted the Zamora trophy 4 times and was one of the key architects of Atletico’s league winning season in 2021. He has made a total of 257 matches for the Rojiblancos and became the the fastest goalkeeper to reach 100 clean sheets in the Spanish League.
