Bruno Fernandes had won the award last year, despite only playing for half a season following his arrival from Sporting Lisbon in late January. With this, Manchester United’s latest Portuguese sensation Fernandes has now won the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year Award two seasons running, which puts him on a par with Roy Keane, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Bruno Fernandes has become just the fifth player in the club’s history to win back-to-back Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year awards.

Bruno Fernandes lifted the trophy, presented by club kit sponsor Adidas Football, in his first campaign, despite only joining in January 2020, and has followed it up with the top individual prize again for 2020/21 after fans voted in huge numbers.

Luke Shaw and Edinson Cavani emerged as the main rivals for the prize after also enjoying superb seasons in the red shirt. In the end, however, Bruno was a very convincing victor with 63 per cent of the votes cast. Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford finished at fourth and fifth respectively.

The classy playmaker was earlier adjudged Player of the Month in November and December, and was also nominated in October and February.

Fernandes has enjoyed another remarkable campaign, scoring 18 times in 36 Premier League starts, claiming nine goals in Europe (Champions League and Europa League) and not forgetting his masterful free-kick winner against Liverpool in the Emirates FA Cup. He has also contributed 11 assists in the Premier League and a further five in Europe and tops many charts for the most creative and productive midfielder around.

The prolific Portuguese midfielder has found the net 28 times so far this term, which is a record for a Premier League midfielder in a single campaign across all competitions, beating Frank Lampard’s mark of 27 set in 2010, with his goal against Liverpool. With three more games to play including the Europa League final, Fernandes can extend his lead even further between now and the end of the month.

David de Gea remains the only player to have won the award three years in a row, but Fernandes now has a chance to match him next season. He can be fairly confident of doing so, having won 63 percent of the vote this time round.

Bruno Fernandes also won Manchester United’s Goal of the Season award for 2020/21, with his astonishing effort against the Toffees during the exciting 3-3 draw at Old Trafford in February this year winning the most votes. He now becomes the first Red since Robin van Persie, back in 2013, to hold both the annual Player and Goal accolades at the same time.

Luke Shaw won the Players’ Player of the Year to add to his tally after his consistent run of top form in last few months for United.
