Is it coming home this year?- A question the English fans have been asking for ages and have continued to ask in this summer’s EURO 2020. England placed in Group D of the tournament have one of the most exciting squads in the competition.
A lot was expected of Southgate’s side and many labelled them as one of the favourites to lift the trophy this year cometh 11th of July. However, so far the English side have rather disappointed their fans with underwhelming performances. A win was expected in England’s second game after they laboured to a 1-0 win over Croatia on the first match-day.
Gareth Southgate has copped severe criticism for his starting lineups in England matches so far
Despite winning that match, England were poor for large chunks of the game and a majority of question marks were raised over Gareth Southgate’s starting lineup as he decided to start Kieran Trippier ahead of his left-backs.
And after the drab 0-0 draw against Scotland at Wembley, the fans voiced their frustrations by booing players off the pitch. The coach admitted that England should have won the game and was ready for the criticism because they hadn’t.
He said, “I think it was a frustrating night, we know we can play better. [You’ve] got to give Scotland credit, they defended valiantly and played well.
“We didn’t do enough to win the game but the thing we have to worry about in tournament football after that is we had to make sure we didn’t lose it.”
“The whole team can look at ourselves, [and] that starts with me – we’ve got to be better. We didn’t do enough to win the game tonight, [wit] not enough attempts on goal. We have to go away and look at that. We know it’s a disappointment for our supporters, but we have to dust ourselves down and move on.”
