ISL 2021-22: Who are ATKMB’s foreign players?

ATKMB or ATK Mohun Bagan came just a step short of claiming their first Indian Super League title last year, after losing out closely in the finals against Mumbai City FC. The newly formed side had a great season, wherein they managed to finish second in the league stages winning 12 of their 20 matches.

They will go into the eighth edition of the tournament with a very settled side, which has seen most of their players from the past season be retained and Antonio Lopes Habas will want to take the plunge this year and win the title.

Ahead of ATKMB’s season opener against Kerala Blasters, we take a look into the ATK Mohun Bagan‘s foreign players for the 2021/22 edition of the Indian Super League season.

ATK Mohun Bagan’s talisman striker Roy Krishna is in his second season at the club. The Fijian forward won the Hero of the tournament award last year for his outstanding performance in front of goal, which saw him net 14 goals and provide 8 assists throughout the season. In all, he has scored 29 goals in 44 matches and will want to continue his hot streak this year as well.

Roy Krishna’s striker partner David Williams joined ATK in 2019 from Wellington Phoenix. The Australian striker scored 7 goals in 18 matches in his debut season and his partnership with Roy Krishna caught everyone’s eye in the league. Williams signed a one-year contract extension with ATK Mohun Bagan this year and needs to repay the faith which the club have shown in him after he only scored 6 goals in the previous edition.

One of the new arrivals at the club, Hugo Boumous joined ATKMB from Mumbai City in a bumper 14.5 crore deal after winning the title last year. Antonio Lopes Habas brought him into the club to give his side the attacking spark in midfield courtesy of his exploits last season with the Islanders. Hugo Boumous scored three goals and registered seven assists and has already played for FC Goa and Mumbai City FC in the league making a total of 57 appearances in the past four editions.

Joni Kauko

Joni Kauko joined ATK Mohun Bagan this summer and is one of the biggest signings in the Indian Super League. The Finnish international represented Finland in this year’s EURO 2020 and has made 28 appearances for the national side since making his debut way back in 2012. The 31-year old midfielder can play all across the midfield and even take on an advanced role, if needed. Kauko made his ATK Mohun Bagan debut in the AFC Cup inter-zonal match, in which they, unfortunately, lost 6-0 against FC Nasaf.

Carl McHugh

Carl McHugh is an Irish midfielder, who joined ATK in 2019 from Scottish side Motherwell FC. His first season with the club ended early due to an injury, however, the club kept their faith in him and he was signed on for ATK Mohun Bagan next year. McHugh had an exceptional season in defence and was one of the key players in their run to the finals of the Indian Super League. So far he has made a total of 27 appearances in the ISL and scored a single goal, which came in his debut match in India.

Jose Luis Espinosa Arroyo (Tiri)

Jose Luis Espinosa Arroyo or Tiri as he is popularly known is one of the longest-serving foreign players of the Indian Super League. Tiri joined ATK way back in 2015 and played for the club till 2016. He rejoined the club last year and made 20 appearances in the heart of the defence, leading ATKMB to a runner-up spot. He will continue to be a key figure this season as well for Antonio Lopes Habas, but he must do more to secure a starting lineup spot given the new foreign player rules.
