Atletico Madrid came out with a 2-0 victory against a struggling FC Barcelona side at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano. The Rojiblancos scored both their goals through direct and free-flowing counter-attacking football. Luis Suarez turned provider for Thomas Lemar, who scored with a perfect finish in the 22nd minute. The former Barcelona man then himself scored his first goal against Barcelone to seal the tie for Diego Simeone’s side, after being played on 1v1 by Lemar.

Jan Oblak (7/10)- The Atletico Madrid goalkeeper will be pleased with the clean sheet tonight. He took a hefty knock upon clearing the ball away from Memphis Depay in a corner kick.

Jose Gimenez (7/10) – The Uruguayan international put in a commanding performance tonight. Philippe Coutinho was getting ready to shoot in the first half but he read the danger and blocked him off.

Mario Hermoso ( 6/10)- Hermoso looked shaky on the ball at times and was not decisive. He gave away the ball cheaply to Gavi in the second half which could’ve been a goal.

Stefan Savic (7/10)- A commanding performance from the center back tonight. Savic was very good in the air and won most of his duels

Thomas Lemar (8/10)- Thomas Lemar fired Atletico Madrid into the lead with a sumptuous hit into the top right-hand corner. Luis Suarez does well to release the French international whose shot is pure and rifles in.

Yannick Carrasco (7/10) – The Belgian international was operating on the left-hand side of the midfield tonight for Atletico Madrid. He combined well with Joao Felix and Luis Suarez.

Marcos Llorente (7/10)- The Spanish international was combining very well with the forward line. Llorente played a lovely one-two with Thomas Lemar in the starting minutes but the latter’s shot was wide.

Koke (6/10)- The midfielder was continuously trying to get the deliveries into the box but failed to have consistency. One of the crosses found Marcos Llorente whose shot was wayward.

Rodrigo De Paul (6/10)- Rodrigo De Paul went into the referee’s book after a dangerous challenge on Barcelona fullback Sergio Dest. He was subbed off for Kieran Trippier.

Joao Felix (7/10)- The Portuguese youngster had a great opportunity to score in the first half but failed to convert. Felix is set up nicely by Carrasco and drills in a shot into the bottom corner but it goes wide.

Luis Suarez (8/10)- Luis Suarez got on the scoresheet against his former team to haunt Ronald Koeman and company. Atletico Madrid hit Barcelona on the counterattack and Thomas Lemar tees up Luis Suarez who calmly finishes.

  • Kieran Trippier (6/10)- The right back came on for Rodrigo De Paul at the half way break. Diego Simeone didn’t want to risk De Paul who was booked.
  • Antoine Griezmann (6/10)- One former Barcelona striker gave way for another as Antoine Griezmann replaced Luis Suarez.
  • Angel Correa (6/10)- The striker came on for Joao Felix in the second half. However unlike his Portuguese teammate he was not that effective for the time he was on.

FC Barcelona Player Ratings

Marc-André Ter Stegen- 5.5/10- The goalkeeper could not stop either of the goals scored by Atletico Madrid. He made one good stop in the second half but should have done better for the twin goals scored past him.

Gerard Piqué- 6/10- The defender did not make any individual errors and was decent with his passing. He did well while dealing with Luis Suarez and the Joao Felix combination.

Ronald Araújo- 5/10- Araujo has been a rock at the back for Barcelona this season, but he was very poor on the night as he was caught positionally on both the goals scored by Atletico Madrid in the first half.

Sergiño Dest 6/10- The American right-back was played at left-back and spent most of his time higher up the pitch, but failed to create any clear-cut chances in attack. He was taken off for the final 5 minutes.

Óscar Mingueza- 5/10- The right-back was caught out high up the pitch during the goals and did not provide much-attacking threat while on the ball.

Philippe Coutinho- 6.5/10- The Brazilian had a decent night on the wing, and linked up well with Depay showing his natural flair. However, he missed a sitter of a chance and was immediately replaced by Ansu Fati.

Sergio Busquets- 6/10- The Spanish midfielder was decent on the ball as he carried it out for his side. Off the ball, he was caught out far too many times by the pace of the Atleti midfielders.

Nicolas Gonzalez- 5.5/10- The youngster had a rather baptism to fire and did not have a great time on the pitch. He did not make much impact in Barcelona’s attacks and was replaced at the halftime break.

Memphis Depay 6/10- The Dutch striker won few free kicks for his side in attack with his nifty feet but hardly at a sight on goal. He also lacked perfection with his free-kicks and was a bit wayward.

Gavi- 5.5/10- Gavi was good in phases as he found his teammates with crisp passes but could not provide much threat in attack, as was hoped of him. He received a yellow card for a poor foul on Lemar in the first half.

Frenkie de Jong- 6.5/10- Frenkie finished with a pass completion rate of 92 percent, but it was hardly any threat for the opposition. He was good defensively and made 4 clear tackles.

Substitues

  • Sergio Roberto- 5.5/10- The Spanish midfielder came on to replace Nico Gonzalez after the halftime break. He was decent, after being shifted into right-back and gave some good balls for Fati to run onto down the flank.
  • Ansu Fati- 6/10- Fati came on to replace Coutinho at the hour mark. He had a poor free-kick attempt and was not much involved in Barcelona’s attacks.
  • Luuk De Jong- /10- De Jong came on for the final 15 minutes to provide a focal point in attack for the Blaugranas.
  • Riqui Puig- /10- The out-of-favor midfielder came on for Gavi at the 75th-minute mark.
