Marcelo Bielsa has signed a new one year contract extension at Leeds United which will see the Argentine manager remain at the club till June 2022. The official signature came in almost about 6 months after the manager had verbally agreed to stay at the Premier League club beyond this summer.

Bielsa had already stated at a press-conference earlier this week that his contractual situation was resolved and the club released an official statement yesterday backing up their manager’s word.

Marcelo Bielsa led Leeds to a Premier League return after 16 years

Marcelo Bielsa has had an overwhelming impact on Leeds United as the manager helped the club return to the Premier League after a long hiatus of 16 years in 2020. He transformed the football club ever since his arrival in 2018 and is one of the highly regarded coaches going around world football at the moment.

Even in his first season in the Premier League, he lifted the club to a top half finish as Leeds finished 9th in the table with a total of 59 points and pundits lauded them for their high intensity style of play, something which isn’t seen much in football nowadays.

After signing the contract, Marcelo Bielsa spoke to the club’s official website and said: “From my point of view this is an extraordinary club. It’s not often you have a club who designates so much volume of investment to the improvement of the training.

“In this sense, Leeds have made a significant contribution economically for the tools for a manager to prepare his players to be the ideal ones. Everything that we need in this area, the club has resolved it with a very high investment.

“Whether that be the pitches, the facilities, the technology, commodities for the work of the players and in this sense, I am very astounded by the conduct of the club. I think the most important coaches that world football has would value what this club means in terms of organisation, structure and the public.”

Leeds United start their Premier League campaign on the 14th of August with a trip to Manchester United.
