Former Real Madrid midfielder Marcos Llorente renews Atletico Madrid contract till 2027

Spanish midfielder Marcos Llorente has signed a bumper contract extension at Atletico Madrid, which will see him play at the Rojiblancos till 2027. The 26-year old midfielder joined the club from city rivals Real Madrid in 2019, for a £35m fee on an initial 5 year contract.

The contract extension comes on the same date the played made his debut at the club two years ago. Llorente’s career has taken a gigantic leap since his arrival at the club after he struggled for game time under Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid.

At Atletico Madrid, Marcos Llorente has found himself a manager who believes in him and has brought out several new aspects in his game. Llorente was one of the primary reasons Atletico Madrid won the La Liga title last year, ending a drought of over 7 years.

Llorente scored a total of 12 goals and provided as many as 11 assists in the league winning campaign for Atletico in 2020/21. In all, Marcos Llorente has played in a total of 82 matches and scored an impressive 18 goals during his 2 seasons.

Initially known as a defensive midfielder since his academy days, Diego Simeone has used him higher up the pitch in a much attacking role and the midfielder has repaid his manager with crucial goals and assists. Llorente’s high work rate has also enabled Simeone use him as a right-back at times and the midfielder has thrived at that position as well.

Taking a cue out of Simeone’s book, even Spanish manager Luis Enrique played Llorente at right-back in this summer’s EURO 2020.

“I arrived at Atletico full of ambition two years ago,” Llorente said on Twitter as he reacted to the news.

“Since then, I’ve travelled a path in which I’ve grown as a footballer and as a person. I’ve fallen and gotten up. I’ve found a second family and we’ve lived unforgettable moments.”

“There are places in the world where you feel full, there are people who make you live life and there are moments that will always remain. I have all that here, where I am happy. And where I’m going to continue until 2027, at least. Let’s continue on this beautiful path together.”
