Manchester United supporters are being urged via social media to avoid Old Trafford when Liverpool visits this month.

On August 22, the Reds visit their fierce archrivals in what will be a preseason showdown between two sporting titans, but United’s supporters have been asked to stay away from what will be English football’s most illustrious match because of the way their team is being run by its owners, the Glazer family.

In an effort to send a message to their American owners, United fan Aidan Walsh, whose @AidanWalshMUFC account has more than 185,000 followers, is urging fans to avoid Old Trafford later this month.

The message, which reads “#MUNLIV Aug 22 #EmptyOlfTrafford,” appears to be the latest attempt by United’s supporters to pressure the Glazers, an own family that is bitterly despised by the United fan base, to make changes.

By Tuesday, the tweet, which includes the hashtag #EmptyOldTrafford, had received hundreds of responses and retweets in addition to over 11,000 likes. United’s owners, who have been in power since 2005, have long been the target of boycott campaigns by the team’s fans, however recent failures on the field have only added to the resentment.

Although it’s uncertain if the campaign would result in noticeably fewer spectators inside the 74,000-seat stadium, a completely empty Old-Trafford would undoubtedly generate media attention for a match that is now without a doubt the most watched in all of football.
