Vitesse Arnhem earned a narrow 1-0 victory over NEC Nijmegen in the latest Eredivisie fixture courtesy of a goal by Nikolai Baden Frederiksen. The Danish footballer’s first-half strike in the 16th minute gave Vitesse their fifth win of the season. They are currently 6th in the league with 16 points – 6 points adrift of Ajax Amsterdam who are sitting at the top of the table.
The end of the match witnessed quite an amusing incident. The Vitesse fans who were the travelling fans due to the match being an away fixture, occupied a stand at the Goffertstadion, just like it’s customary for the away fans. The Vitesse players joined in the celebration with the fans.
Stand at Gofferstadion collapses
Just as the fans were celebrating, the stand gave way and collapsed. Luckily it didn’t give way too much. And according to ESPN FC, no injuries have been reported. Had the stand completely given way, things would have gotten worse. The fans would be counting themselves lucky to have come away unscathed.
As for Vitesse, they host Tottenham Hotspur next in a UEFA Europa Conference League Fixture. Having won one and lost one, Vitesse will be looking forward to giving it their all to try and qualify for the knockout stages. The match takes place on the 21st of October.
In the Eredivisie, Vitesse will be facing Go Ahead Eagles – a club based in the city of Deventer. They are currently placed number 13 in the table. Vitesse will be looking forward to bettering their last year’s performance and making it to at least the Europa League this time around.
