Football is a game of many emotions. The passion and love for the game is what makes it so special not only for the players but also for the fans. We thus often witness players going out of their lines to celebrate their goals even at the expense of being penalised sometimes. This is what makes Football celebrations so famous. And when it comes to football celebrations, how can we not mention Cristiano Ronaldo’s famous “Siiii”.

The Portuguese talisman is undoubtedly one of the biggest footballing stars to have ever stepped on the field. He is the highest goalscorer in football and has numerous accolades to his name. But if there is something synonymous with Cristiano, it’s his famous celebration. After scoring important goals, the Portuguese always runs down the touchline, swirls in the air and lands with his hands wide apart shouting “Siiii” which is the Spanish for ‘Yes’. He has been doing this for almost over a decade now and it’s probably the most famous football celebration ever. But what is the history behind this famous celebration and when did Cristiano Ronaldo first try it? Let’s find out in this article.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s First ‘Siiii’ celebration

According the Cristiano Ronaldo, the first time he did the Siiii celebration was against Chelsea back in 2013

In a latest interview, Cristiano Ronaldo revealed that is was in a friendly match that he played for his former club Real Madrid against Chelsea FC back in 2013 at Miami where he pulled off the classic celebration for the first time.

“Well, I was in the US and we played against Chelsea and I don’t know where it came from. I just scored and I went, ‘sii!,’ Ronaldo said.

“But it was natural, to be honest.

“After that, I started doing it and I feel like the fans, when they see me they’re like ‘sii’ and I was like, ‘wow, people remember Cristiano because of the sii,’ so I continued like that.”

Fan Theory: The ‘Half Siiii’

Despite Ronaldo’s claims that it was in 2013 that he pulled off the Siiii celebration for the first time, some fans argue that he did it rather unknowingly during his times at Manchester United back in 2008 during a match against Newcastle United. The Portuguese scored a cheeky freekick against Newcastle and then did what seems like a ‘half hearted’ celebration that looked exactly like the Siiii celebration.
