In May 2016, Randy Lerner, the then owner of The Clarets and Blue agreed the sale of the club to Recon Group, a company by Chinese businessman Xia Jiantong. The sale was completed in June 2016 for a reported £76 million after being approved by the Football League, with the club becoming part of Recon Group’s Sport, Leisure and Tourism division.

However, Aston Villa did not prosper much under their ownership as the Villans failed to secure promotion to the Premier League for 2 years running and a lot of financial problems appeared under their reign. Fan protests were carried out, as their best players were sold off hampering their play and the results on the pitch showed. This led to the then owner, asking for additional investment to run the club and it came in from NSWE group. Under new owners, the club started improving in the first season itself as they earned a return to the Premier League.
