A former Formula 1 driver was not pleased with Valtteri Bottas' performance, especially in traffic situations.

The 2021 Formula 1 season saw one of the most intense rivalries in a long time, as Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton battled it out. In an ultimate race of anticipation, it was Verstappen who reigned supreme, winning the World Championship Drivers title. Yet it was Mercedes who walked away with the constructors championship, an award they would not have won without their second driver and teammate Valtteri Bottas.

This was Bottas‘ last year at Mercedes, as after five long years at Mercedes the Finn will be moving on to Alfa Romeo for the 2022 season. While there has been a lot of talk about his performance and treatment at Mercedes, it cannot be denied that he was a crucial part of making the team a successful one.

Bottas’ last race with Mercedes at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was a roller coaster ride for him. It was not an ideal race for the driver, with him only finishing in 10th place, leaving Hamilton to defend himself in the front against both Red Bulls.

While Bottas was fighting the AlphaTauri’s further back, his teammate was left to race alone in the all important final lap of the race that decided the championship. It was startling that Bottas could not be at the Yas Marina Circuit to defend against Verstappen, especially during the crucial pit stops that the race comprised of.

Formula 1 Expert and former driver Marc Surer said that Valtteri Bottas too often found himself at the bottom of the field during his time at Mercedes. Referring to the last lap of the Abu Dhabi GP he said to planetf1, “Then Max wouldn’t have made it,. Overtaking two cars in one lap would not have worked. But Bottas was nowhere.”

Adding to that he said, “Bottas is actually a failure in traffic. He always gets stuck and has an insanely hard time. The guy just can’t overtake other cars that are over a second slower with the fastest car in the field. That’s his weakness.”
