“Are we in kindergarden or are we racing?” Helmut Marko lashes out at Toto Wolff
Helmut Marko and Toto Wolff
When Lewis Hamilton was handed penalties one after the other ahead of the race on Sunday, few expected him to win the race. However improving performances, session after session ensured that the seven-time world champion wins one of his greatest ever races against Max Verstappen. After the result Mercedes boss Toto Wolff was unable to hide his frustration with the race stewards for the same. Which is surely not digested well by Helmut Marko.
To those who are not aware, a particular instance took place much before the LAP 58 wherein Hamilton tried to overtake Verstappen on the straight but was brushed aside off the track by the ace Dutchman. The stewards called it a racing incident, but Wolff thinks differently. According to him, Max Verstappen should have received a time penalty of five seconds. If that was the case, Valtteri Bottas might have taken his second place.
Helmut Marko on Toto Wolff
Helmut Marko parried his rival’s statements. “Are we racing or are we at nursery school?” he asks mockingly.
Team boss Christian Horner agreed, “These are two guys racing hard against each other, but their wheels didn’t touch. They are racing for the world championship. A penalty would really not be appropriate unless it had ended in a collision.”
Having said that after the Brazilian GP 2021, the entire Formula One circus heads straight into the next race week. To do so, it must all travel to Qatar, where the soap opera surrounding Red Bull and Mercedes can continue unhindered.
