Breaking: Stewards decide in Max Verstappen’s favor; retains second place

When Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton drove off the track in Sao Paolo, it was the talking point of Brazilian Grand Prix as the reigning champion made a comeback in the Driver’s Standings. Entering the last race of the triple-header, Hamilton and Mercedes were keen on getting the particularly instance reviewed as they thought a penalty should be imposed at all cost.

The stewards saw no reason to reopen the case, which means that a penalty for the Dutchman is definitely off the table. The Stewards stand by their decision on incident Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton

Christian Horner stated in the press conference: “It could be argued that the footage is new and relevant, but, “Is it significant? Absolutely not.” Admits he’d be disappointed if it goes any further, and he’s frustrated that it is taking so long to announce a decision. Whereas Toto Wolff️ stated, “We don’t expect to gain anything from the right of review … it’s more about the principle and the philosophy.”

After the race, director Michael Masi announced that the onboard footage of Verstappen’s car had not been considered when making the decision. Mercedes took this as an opportunity to reopen the case and met with the stewards ahead of the Qatar Grand Prix.

The German team got no answer from the stewards. They took the original decision with the ‘let them race’ approach, and the onboard images have not changed that.


Verstappen therefore retains his second place and does not have to give it away to the Finn Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas.
