This year’s Formula 1 season has been an intense one to say the least, as emotions ran high in lieu of one of the greatest title fights of all time. Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton’s rivalry will be one to remember for a long time, as the Dutchman walked away with his first title.

Yet the rivalry was not restricted only to the drivers, with team principals Toto Wolff and Christian Horner also engaged in their fair share of drama. Their off track blowouts reached an extent where several experts called it childish and unnecessary. Needless to say, the very last race of the season at Abu Dhabi had its fight not only on the track but also on the radio.

The last lap of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix saw some controversy and confusion, as a last minute decision to allow lapped cars to unlap themselves became the decider for the entire year. As Verstappen raced away with the title, Mercedes were quick to express their frustration and dissatisfaction.

As the frustration over Michael Masi’s decision was apparent, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff was rightly heard exclaiming “This is not right!” over the team radio. As his anger was heard all over the world, FIA director Ross Brawn suggested that team principals should not have the ability to talk to Masi during any races.

“I agree with Ross. But I equally blame Ross and myself because we have been part of the decision making to broadcast more of the channels for the purpose of transparency and entertainment for the fans,” said Wolff to news.com.au.

“There is so much going on on the intercom that giving fans a little bit of an overview of all the little dramas that happen, like is the car breaking down, are we having some kind of strategy discussions, was meant well.” Wolff felt that all team principals needed to make themselves accountable, and not overshoot again like this year.
