The 2021 F1 season came to a thrilling conclusion, as the drivers championship was decided on the final lap of the Abu Dhabi GP. Max Verstappen claimed the title, overtaking Lewis Hamilton on the final lap of the Abu Dhabi GP. Among the big movers in 2022, George Russell will move to Mercedes, as he replaces Valtteri Bottas at Silver Arrows.

George Russell believes that five teams are capable of doing something special in 2022, which includes McLaren and Ferrari. The youngster stated that a legendary team like Ferrari have been through tough times in the past decade. However, they bounced back in style in 2021, claiming P3 in the constructors championship.

Russell also stated that McLaren could be the surprise package in 2022, given their talented engineers, drivers and strong infrastructure.

A team like Ferrari, who have been through a difficult period over the last two years, are going to be so hungry, especially with the new rule changes, to come back fighting,” Russell said.

Similar with McLaren as well. These teams have got the infrastructure, they’ve got the talent within the engineering departments, within the drivers as well, to really, really fight,” he added.

George Russell stressed on the fact that development of their machinery will be a key factor in 2022. With several new regulations coming into effect from this year, all drivers will need to adapt to their new machinery.

George Russell believes that it will take some time to adjust to the new regulations, hence constantly working on their desired output should be their goal. Russell believes that all teams are going to make progress throughout the season.

“I truly believe there are probably five teams all capable of really doing something special next year, so you’ve got to be absolutely on it. I think the development is going to be so key next year. It’s not going to be whoever has the fastest race, or Barcelona test or Bahrain race,” said Russell.

“It’s whoever manages to understand their car well, and can develop and build from those foundations throughout the year, and I think all of the teams are going to make big progress from race one to the end of the season,” he added.
