The hit Netflix docufiction series ‘Drive to Survive,’ which debuted in 2019, closely follows the events of a season prior to the one in which it was released. Similarly, the fourth instalment of the highly anticipated series, which focused on the dramatic events of the 2021 Formula One season, was released earlier this month.

The show however is known for its overdramatization and putting things out of context, which has been a significant source of criticism from critics. It’s also been suspected of misreading grid connections and inserting phoney or misdirected radio talks.

Current defending world champion Max Verstappen has always been pretty vocal about his dislike for ‘Drive to Survive’ for the way the much-talked docufiction series has fabricated its content. He even went on to choose to not be a part of the recent season of ‘Drive to Survive’ which mainly highlighted on the showdown that went down at Abu Dhabi in December 2021 for the title race between him and 7-time world championship winner Lewis Hamilton. He came out in support for McLaren driver Lando Norris who has been portrayed with a negative connotation in the latest edition of the series.

“It’s just not my thing,” Verstappen mentioned ahead of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.” Then of course throughout the whole season they try to pick moments and fabricate it in a way and for me personally what I didn’t like, and it’s not even about me, it was about Lando and (McLaren team mate) Daniel (Ricciardo). (They) made it look like Lando was a bit of a d**k, which he isn’t at all. When you’re new to the sport and you have never seen a racing car or a Formula One car in general, they don’t like him. Why should that be? Because he is a great guy. You just immediately get a wrong picture of a person.”

Verstappen’s remarks alluded to a fourth-season incident in which Norris states he has no compassion for his Australian teammate’s troubles with McLaren’s car. F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali told a select group of journalists that he intends to speak with Netflix about maintaining their plot grounded in reality, and that he will also speak with drivers.
