French Open 2020: Qualifier Nadia Podoroska reaches quarter-finals to meet Elina Svitolina
The World No. 131 Nadia Podoroska was just an anonymous qualifier, but today she has made it to the quarter-finals of the French Open 2020. After Yaroslava Shvedova in 2012, Podoroska and Martina Trevisan have become the only qualifiers to make it to the quarter-finals of the slam.
The Argentinian qualifier defeated Barbora Krejcikova 2-6 6-2 6-3 after dropping the opening set. She is up against the third seed Elina Svitolina in the quarter-finals.
Podoroska takes Argentine flag high
As the match began, Krejcikova controlled the ball well and kept her opponent on the run. She broke her opponents’ serve and dominated rallies to win the opening set.
As the match moved forward in the second set, the opening five games were very close. In the sixth game, Podoroska earned the game. As she broke Krejcikova, Podoroska had an upper hand in the set.
The final set was again a close one. Podoroska and Krejcikova ended a tight battle in two hours and eleven minutes. The last set was close but Argentine took three breaks to take the lead. Podoroska won 2-6,6-2,6-3 as she is now up against world no.5 Elina Svitolina.
