It is common practice for the UFC promotion to call up a backup fighter before a huge bout to preserve the business for a big pay-per-view.  A similar situation occurred when Michael Chandler took a trip to Fight Island as a backup fighter for the Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Dustin Poirier bout at UFC 254. Reports suggested that Chandler was paid an undisclosed sum of money for his efforts as the backup fighter.
